| Collaborative Creations |
It's not our first time around the block when it comes to collaborating with local artists to provide creative solutions for our clients. A peek at our previous post featuring Jeff Blandford is a great example of that.
Well, we're at it again, this time pulling in the expertise of two local arists to create the keychains you see pictured here. These beautiful creations were created by designer Elyse Marie Welcher and metalsmith Abbey Blodgett. For now, they're only available at California 89 in Truckee, CA. However, you can expect to see them make their way to the online store soon! |

We are so thrilled to announce the opening of California 89, an apparel and lifestyle goods company based in Truckee, CA. Square One had a blast developing the brand for this soon-to-be staple of the Lake Tahoe experience. Inspired by the California 89 state highway that passes around Lake Tahoe, we worked with our client to bring the tradition and energy of the area and it's many outdoor activities to life through the branding, merchandise, and design of the physical space. We recently designed the ArtPrize 2012 Event Guide. To complement this year's black and white theme, the guide took form as this accessible and affordable newspaper format booklet. We had the pleasure of working with writer Karin Lannon, photographer Ryan Pavlovich, and nearby printer Stafford Media Solutions.
This year's guide details everything the ArtPrize visitor needed to know, including full artist and venue listing, a calendar of events, juror profiles, a map of the ArtPrize boundaries, and voting information. It all came together at the ArtPrize Awards last week, which was held at the Grand Rapids Press in downtown Grand Rapids. Talk about Arts & Entertainment!

| Roll Models for our latest shoot |
July has been a busy month of Square One Design. Among many other big projects, we're happy to be developing a new website for Kickboard USA, a delightful all-ages scooter company with a full line of beautifully designed scooters. To complete their updated web look, we spent last week shooting photography all over town. We're happy to offer you a behind-the-scenes peek of where we've been!

Today is the last day of the NeoCon World's Trade Fair. Whether you were there in person or not, we wanted a chance to share with you some work we've done. This was our third year working with Holland-based furniture maker, Sparkeology, and our third year designing their NeoCon booth. | Sparkeology in action |
Last month we had the opportunity to art direct another photo shoot for furniture maker, Sparkeology. Working with such a fun brand, we got the chance to use some really fun props - including a hot pink electric guitar, a skateboard, and even a loveable Great Dane! We'd like to thank photographer Ryan Pavlovich for his excellent shots, as well as Sparkeology for the opportunity to help launch new products, including Sylvie, Eddie, and Stella.

| Strategic Change + Growth. |
I'm thrilled to announce that Emily Gremel, Brent Casanova, Chika Okafor and Alison Ver Meulen have joined Square One.
Emily is taking on the roles of strategist, researcher and project lead. She’ll draw from her education in marketing and her experience handling strategic planning, research and social media for Fortune 100 firms.
Our new designer, Brent, comes to us with five years of experience in branding corporate and small business accounts. His strong conceptual and technical skills and highly organized work process will be a great addition to Square One.
Chika is sharing her time between ArtPrize and Square One in a coveted internship position. An OSU graduate, she is new to Grand Rapids, but quickly acclimating to our creative city.
Alison is interning with us for the summer, putting her experience at MTV to work in our own much smaller venue.

| Illustrating success for CACIL |
We just printed this Annual Report for Capital Area Center for Independent Living (www.cacil.org) with our friends at Diversified Data. It was printed with Indigo on Neenah Conservation PC White 100.
We also had the opportunity to work with the amazing illustrator Monica Hellström, represented by Anna Goodson Management, on this piece. Her wonderful interpretations of our profile shots really brought this little book to life.

We were so excited to work with Saugatuck potter/claymaster Jeff Blandford (www.volmod.com) on a project for Kellogg. We teamed up to create beautiful red and white bowls for Kellogg's special event – Jeff fired a custom edition of 75 bowls, and we created the packaging.

In addition to new packaging for the vacuum itself, we've worked on giving a new look to their cleaning solutions, fragrances, marketing materials and soon-to-be revamped website. | New AIGA Leadership |
We're very proud to announce that Square One principal, Mike Gorman, is now officially president of AIGA's West Michigan chapter. Since its inception just two years ago, the chapter's grown to boast more than 340 members, and more than 580 facebook and 820 twitter followers. It's hosted more than 30 events, workshops, meetups, parties, and premier speakers in West Michigan. In other words, it's been a fantastically successful two years. We can't wait to see where it goes from here. Congrats Mike!

This book isn't new but if you haven't read it, read it. If you have read it, reread it. 15 minutes cover to cover and you'll walk away extremely motivated. A professor at SCAD gave me this book as parting gift, it has quite possibly changed my life. I try to read it once every couple years. |

Square One recently designed and published What Make's You Happy? by children's author and Illustrator Amy Young. The book was conceived by Via Design, as a thank you gift to Helen DeVos for her extraordinary effort in bringing the new children’s hospital to fruition. The book can be viewed on kiosks in the lobby and purchased at the gift shop as well as several local booksellers. |

I just picked up Steve Martin's latest book, An Object of Beauty, at Schuler's. Not only is the cover amazingly illustrated by Darren Booth, but I can't wait to tear into this book about a woman's entry into the high-stakes world of art collecting in New York City. The book wrap is even printed on a canvas textured stock. Truly a book that imitates art. |

My wallet and I got into trouble. Already looking forward to December when Renegade's holiday market makes its way back to the mid west in Pulaski Park, and of course, the UICA Holiday Artist's Market here in Grand Rapids. A few of my favorites were Chicago's own Kindlingshop's facet rocks (beautiful), Brainstorm's Red Sky at Night poster, and Portland, OR's craft svcs. prints, among others. |

This wallpaper studio out of North Adams, Massachusetts makes amazing hand-painted and hand-printed papers. Founder Karen Combs is an Indiana native (me too!) with a background in art history and printmaking. Their designs are playful, colorful interpretations of classic motifs.
